About CLEANUP NEPAL

The organization focuses on five thematic areas: Waste Management, Climate Action and Justice, Circular Economy, Education (Environmental and Sustainable Waste Management), and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). It also integrates four cross-cutting issues: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change, Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion, Child Protection, and Sustainable Development. CLEAN UP NEPAL which is also known as Swachha Safa Nepal is a non-governmental and non-profit making organization established in 22 May 2014 with a mission to Clean spaces, clean air, clean water, and knowledgeable communities that thrive with responsible lifestyles 

and good health. Our vision is to Cleaner and healthier Nepal where communities are knowledgeable about waste, they manage waste responsibly and sustainably to keep our land, water, and air clean. The organization focuses on five thematic areas: Waste Management, Climate Action and Justice, Circular Economy, Education (Environmental and Sustainable Waste Management), and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). CLEAN UP Nepal has a holistic approach to environment conservation, waste management, value chain, public awarness, advocacy and policy formation and effective implementation. We promote responsible waste practices through community engagement, awareness campaigns, and educational programs. We work together with government agencies, schools, and local communities to promote sustainable waste management and policy improvements. Education and awareness are at the heart of what we do. We implement the Zero Waste at Schools (ZWAS) concept, a comprehensive module designed for effective knowledge transfer.

Our school-based programs, door-to-door campaigns, and  community outreach initiatives aim to build knowledge, shift behaviors, and empower individuals to become environmental stewards. We also conduct training for local authorities and community leaders to strengthen institutional capacity for sustainable environmental governance. 

Our emphasis on data collection, research, and youth involvement enhances the organization’s impact, making it a valuable partner for future collaboration to drive meaningful and lasting change in Nepal. We also contribute to the construction of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs), provide support with waste management equipment, promote recycling and upcycling, and help create value from waste, ensure occupational health and safety of the Waster workers including informal. Construction of WASH facilities to improve access to safe water and sanitation services.

CLEAN UP NEPAL has a Safa Nepal app, an open-data waste management and data collection system. It consists of a web-based dashboard and mobile application and has been developed to allow the
local-level government to undertake evidence-based powerful analysis of waste-related data; provide waste collection and management information; and enable citizens to report waste dumping, burning, and irregular or untimely waste collection services.  Safa Nepal is an award-winning open-data waste management platform recognized by the World Summit Award. It has been selected as WSA (World Submit Award) Winners 2023, selected from 466 nominations in 88 countries. The Safa Nepal App has earned another international prestigious recognition, being selected for the National Energy Globe Award Nepal from over 2,000 projects across 141 countries. This innovative system includes a web-based dashboard and mobile application,
empowering local governments to undertake evidence-based analysis and enabling citizens to report waste-related issues.

 

CLEAN UP NEPAL has extensive experience supporting local governments in integrating sustainable practices into policies and plans. The organization has developed and implemented waste management policies, municipal WASH plans, Green Operation, Environmental budget analysis, Climate justice situational analysis across Nepal. These experiences make CLEAN UP NEPAL uniquely positioned to provide technical assistance to local governments in developing and integrating climate-smart strategies into Local Education Plans (LEPs) and budgets.
